In August 1965, the Pretty Things toured New Zealand with Sandie Shaw and Eden Kane. Fueled by a baiting sensationalist tabloid press, the Pretty Things’ loud and anarchic rhythm and blues and their outrageous antics on and off stage ignited a national scandal and a public outcry that would spread from the newspaper headlines to the Houses of Parliament. The Pretty Things were eventually banned...

The Seeds are widely regarded as one of the best garage bands of the 60s and their song “Pushing Too Hard” has earned a reputation as a proto-punk classic. Despite the fact that the group never achieved the same kind of success as other bands from Los Angeles such as the Byrds or Buffalo Springfield, the Seeds were a big influence on groups from that scene such as the Doors. Their simple direct...

Back in the 60s, the music scene in Los Angeles spawned major bands from that era such as the Byrds, Love and the Doors. The Music Machine was one of the most underrated groups to come out of that scene. Their dark rebellious image and untamed musical approach proved to be a major influence on punk bands from the 70s and beyond. And it was also an influence on bands from the Los Angeles scene s...

Back in the 60s, many British bands had the policy of not including their singles on their albums. This was mostly due to the fact that they didn't want their fans to have to pay twice for the same songs. Most of the A-sides became hits and are regarded as classics from that era, and the Stones released several B-sides which are almost as well-known as the topsides- But this video will focus on...

"Nite-Is-A-Comin" is such a MASSIVE tune. Massive, massive, massive. I remember when Japanese producer Cornelius was making the album "Dr. Head's World Tower" for his group Flipper's Guitar, widely regarded as their best, and it featured so many 60s nods and samples since Cornelius was a huge fan of 60s contemporary rock and pop. There are plenty of "Pet Sounds" samples on it, for instance. But the most massive tune on it deliberately samples "Nite-Is-A-Comin" for their last track for 10 grand minutes.

Wow! If only....if only all those singles and their B-sides were collected, remastered, and released on one CD! Hours, if not days, of pure listening pleasure! Sure, there are some less-than-original and hungry bands trying to cash in on the psychedelic trend, but you could hear many bands moving away from the 50s vocal sounds, and the early 60s Pop sounds.

Did this post draw the most comments? Hell hath no fury like A Beatles fan finding out that someone does not view the Beatles as sacrosanct. The folks that label Chapman as bitter or grumpy obviously don't have mirrors. One man's opinions about music on a first listen and folks need to excoriate him? I bought Abbey Road the day it cane out, and like Roger, I was less than impressed on first listen, but repeated listenings are the true test of the worth of a piece of music. Revolver, my favorite Beatles album and well within my all-time top ten, has improved to my ears over the years. I was impressed by Roger's knowledge of music of the past - the past before another 55 years had gone by. And Family was a great live band the one time that I saw them in '69.

Plenty of cosmic tunes - many of which I got scattered across various psychedelic comps. The Small Faces were at their peak in 68 with the release of their seminal Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake lp. A feature on Immediate would be good, I’ve got all of Loog Oldhams bios and the rise and fall of Immediate records is fascinating 😎✌️☮️

Psychedelia still rules the roost in January '68, with so many cool, trippy sides seeing release--although "Fire Brigade"'s Cochran quote foreshadows the "return to rock'n'roll" trend that would sweep through UK rock that spring. Oddly enough I never really took to "Fire Brigade" until just recently, but now I like it. "Sky Pilot" is one of the greatest tracks from that lineup of The Animals, while "Sunshine Help Me" is a lost classic that would be covered to even greater effect by The Move a few months later. Indeed, I like just about every single reviewed in this clip, from Manfred Mann (their finest hour) to Status Quo to Grapefruit, although you missed a few by Cherry Smash, The Virgin Sleep, The Plague, and Cat's Pyjamas. No matter--this was a BLAST to watch and I'm just as excited to watch this series as I was for '66 and '67!! You're archiving history here, YP!
